31 Great George Street Offices
60,000 sq.ft, seven-storey office building on a prominent steep hillside location within a conservation area of the city centre.

The planning department had imposed strict restrictions on the overall height of the building and this in turn created restrictions on the depth of the floor construction. Three floors of the building are under ground level housing car parking, lift and stair shaft and plant rooms. We used a reinforced concrete trough slab and all of the structure sits in a 350 deep structural zone with nothing projecting below, using a 7.5m square structural grid.

  Conserving Structures
T M Ventham Practice is often involved in restoration and refurbishment projects in addition to new building design. Restoration design can be very challenging, requiring us to provide adequate strength to support the future of the building but at the same time without destroying the historical detail. It is a delicate balance between aesthetics, design, historical preservation alongside strength, safety and the practical use of an old building in the present day.
